The machine comprises a frame (5) supported on rail chassis (6) and a support frame (16) connected which is a storage drum (12) containing a rolled-up conductor wire (2) or support cable (3). A tensioning device (19) is provided to apply the prescribed tension, and a deflecting roller (34) guides the wire in height and lateral position. The support frame locating the storage drum and the tension device is designed to be able to slide transversely relative to the machine frame by drives (30,31), horizontally and vertically to the machine's longitudinal direction. It is also designed to be able to rotate relative to a vertical pivot axis (27).
