A blow out preventer with a telescopic conductor tube assembly having a fir st conductor tube connected to the body and a second conductor tube connected t o a closure providing access to the hydraulic rams. In a first operating mode, a closure lock prevents telescopic movement of the conductor tube assembly and by selecting to suppl y hydraulic fluid to either a first flow path or a second flow path the hydraulic rams c an be moved to either an open or a closed position. In the second operating mode, by selecting to supply hydraulic fluid to either the first flow path or the second flow path telescopic movement of the conductor tube assembly can be effected to either open or close the closure.
