Methods and apparatus for non-destructive testing of the strength of a wooden support 1, such as a power pole or building foundation, are disclosed. Gamma rays 23 are transmitted parallel to a neutral axis through a cross-section of the support and detected 24 at the opposite side of the support. The average density of wood in rows parallel to the neutral axis is calculated, from which the amount of unsound wood in each row can be determined. This allows an estimate of the strength of the wooden support to be made.
