A pure (-)3-((S)-((2S,5R)-4-allyl-2,5-dimethyl-1-piperazinly)(3-thienyl)methyl)phenol compound of formula (I) is disclosed. The use of the compound is described to be for the manufacture of a medicament for the treatment of disorders such as drug and alcohol addiction, mental illness, asthma and arthritis. A method for screening opioid respiratory depression-suppressing compounds is also described. This involves conducting in vitro activity reversal assays, of a candidate respiratory depression-suppressing compound in a receptor tissue, comparatively, in the absence and in the presence of an anti-suppression compound of the formula (I).
