System and method for verifying medical device operational parameters

A system and method for comparing medical device settings with medication orders within a healthcare system. A medical device such as an infusion pump sends data relating to its operational parameters over a communications interface to a first computer which holds data relating to a medication order. The data is compared and the result sent via the communications interface to a remote computer such as a hand-held computer carried by a health professional. A second computer may send the medication order data, and optionally patient information data, to the first computer. The operational parameters of the medical device may be manually input to the device, or transmitted by the first or second computers.
