The device has a main circuit (1) for a coolant traversing a prime mover (2), where the circuit is equipped with a circulating pump (3), a thermostatic valve (4) and a radiator (5). An auxiliary cooling circuit (6) has an auxiliary pump (8) and an auxiliary cooler (7) to cool a component of a motor vehicle, where the cooling circuit is connected to the radiator. The pump (8) circulates a part of the coolant in the cooler and across the radiator when the valve is closed, and the pump (3) circulates the coolant across the radiator when the valve is open. An independent claim is also included for a cooling method for a motor vehicle.
