A rotor for an electric motor, the rotor comprising a rigid metal hub connected by a narrow web to a peripheral rim, upon which is mounted a laminated annular assembly of alternating plates of magnetic field conducting material and magnetic field insulating material. The laminated annular assembly supports the multiple magnetic driving elements, each of which consists of one or more permanent magnets aligned parallel to the axis of the motor driving shaft through the hub of the rotor. Each permanent magnet is surrounded on all sides by a thin coating of magnetic field insulating material to reduce induced currents in the rotor. The invention also embodies an electric motor utilising the said rotor.
