Products and methods for treating vaginal infections

Disclosed herein is a use of an anti-fungal and/or anti-bacterial active ingredient in the manufacture of a solid dosage form, comprising an anti-fungal or anti-bacterial effective amount of the anti-fungal or anti bacterial active ingredient, for the treatment of a vaginal infection in a patient in need thereof, wherein the solid dosage form is suitable for insertion into the vagina at any time after the patient awakens until thirty minutes prior to the patient retiring for the night and for retention in the vaginal cavity throughout the treatment. The solid dosage form may be a solid gelatin capsule, or a suppository. The anti-fungal active ingredient is preferably miconazole nitrate, and the anti-bacterial active ingredient is preferably metronidazole. An external cream containing an anti-fungal or anti-bacterial active ingredient may also be applied at least once per day for at least five days after insertion of said solid dosage form. Vigorous movement subsequent to inserting the solid dosage form is advantageous in the treatment. Such compositions may also comprise one or more probiotics. Also disclosed are solid dosage forms comprising an anti-viral agent. Each of the compositions above may be used to treat an infection of a body cavity in general.
