The system has an injector (7) that injects a reducing agent e.g. ammonia, in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine (3) of a motor vehicle. A reducing agent production unit (8) produces the reducing agent so as to eliminate nitrogen oxide. A catalytic unit (5) is situated on an exhaust line (2) of the engine and is provided for the selective transformation of nitrogen oxides into oxygen and water by catalytic reaction with the reducing agent. A temperature sensor (14) is placed downstream of the unit (5) for determining the temperature in the unit (5). An independent claim is also included for a method for the elimination of nitrogen oxide present in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle.
