A gripping apparatus of a coil lift and a method for controlling the gripping apparatus are provided to prevent damage to a side surface of a coil due to a contact by preventing a contact between a gripping arm and a side surface of a coil. A gripping apparatus of a coil lift includes a touch bar(150), a first weight(157), a metal attaching plate(159), an electromagnet(145), a shoe(160), a first dog(164a), a second dog(164b), a first approach sensor(165a), a hall sensor(146a), and a loading sensor(168). The apparatus pulls and conveys a coil by inserting and withdrawing a shoe into and from a pair of gripping arms. A controller controlling the gripping arm and the electromagnet are mounted to a coil lift according to a control signal. |
