A mobile communication terminal performing a search function by using initials and an operating method thereof are provided to enhance user convenience by searching for desired phone number data via inputted initial search data without complex operation of buttons, and to reduce a search time by automatically searching for the phone number data matched with the inputted initials. A mobile communication terminal performing a search function by using initials comprises an inputting unit(20), a display unit(30), a memory(40), a communication module(50) and a controller(10). The inputting unit(20) enables a user to input data according to operation of buttons. The display unit(30) displays the inputted data. The memory(40) stores person names or store names and phone number data including their phone numbers. The communication module(50) performs data transmission or reception. The controller(10) searches for phone number data by using the initials in accordance with the combination of character data corresponding to inputted data. The controller(10) includes a determination unit(11) and a data processing unit(12). The determination unit(11) determines whether the inputted data is initial search data. The data processing unit(12) reads initials of the inputted initial search data according to the determination result, and searches for the phone number data corresponding to the initials.
