PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recorder which can fully change an ejection volume of ink droplets in tone printing and can reduce variation of a speed and a volume of ink droplets ejected from an ink jet head. SOLUTION: In the ink jet recorder, a response characteristic of the meniscus vibration within a nozzle to a drive signal of the ink jet head is measured. A waveform of the drive signal for ink ejection is set by the operation on the basis of the response characteristic. A driving method is taken in which the waveform of the drive signal is obtained by the operation so that a ratio between a meniscus amplitude from the advancement start of the meniscus to the retreat start of the meniscus and an ink ejection time from the advancement start of the meniscus to the retreat start of the meniscus is substantially constant even when the ejection volume of ink droplets changes.
