PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the coin discriminating accuracy of a coin discriminating device which discriminates coins on the basis of a gray level histogram obtained from a coin image. SOLUTION: Digital multi-leveled image data of the coin photographed by an imaging unit is incorporated. The coin image is divided into a plurality of section images in a first region 29, a second region 30, and a third region 31. The gray level histogram is prepared on the basis of each section image, and a feature quantity such as a peak position is extracted from each gray level histogram. Then, the authenticity of the coin is determined by collating the feature quantity with the feature quantity of a preregistered master coin. COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT
