PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a light shielding device capable of shortening the time taken to open a photographing aperture and shield it from light, and provide an electronic camera. SOLUTION: The photographing aperture 411 is opened and shielded from the light by upper light shielding blades 8 and 9 and lower light shielding blades 6 and 7 traveling in the short side direction of the photographing aperture 411 in a reverse direction to each other. When opening the photographing aperture, the upper light shielding blades 8 and 9 are pulled up and the lower light shielding blades 6 and 7 are pulled down, thereby opening the photographing aperture 411. When shielding the photographing aperture from the light, the first upper light shielding blade 8 and the first lower light shielding blade 6 are superposed in the center in the height direction of the photographing aperture 411 but the second upper light shielding blade 9 is not superposed on the lower light shielding blades 6 and 7 and the second lower light shielding blade 7 is not superposed on the upper light shielding blades 8 and 9. When shielding the photographing aperture from the light, braking is started after the upper light shielding blade 8 and the lower light shielding blade 6 start to be superposed. Thus, breakage caused by the collision of the light shielding blades traveling oppositely is prevented even when vibration in the thickness direction of the light shielding blade is generated when braking.
