The printer has a cleaning device which moves selectively into an operating position for cleaning the cylinder and into a servicing position (3.2) away from the print mechanism. The printer (1) runs in printing mode whilst at the same time the operating position is kept free from the cleaning device (3). The print mechanism has an opening (9) closed by a first protective cover (11) and a second protective cover so that during print operation the opening is held closed by the first cover whilst the cleaning device lies on the second cover in the servicing position.
