The ballast has a power factor correction circuit controlled by an intermediate circuit voltage regulator. The circuit generates direct current intermediate circuit voltage supplied to a converter. A load circuit is attached to an output of the converter. A microcontroller (10) is assigned to the regulator, where external instructions are applied to the microcontroller, and the regulator has properties which depend on the instructions. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for operating an electronic ballast of a gas discharge lamp; (2) a computer software program product supporting a method of operating a gas discharge lamp.
