An apparatus for picking mushrooms comprising: a carriage (2); at least one picking head (7) arranged to move back and forth horizon- tally, a suction pad apparatus (17) by means of which mushrooms are gripped for picking. In an embodiment the picking apparatus (1) further comprises: a movable camera or scanner (19) that is arranged to image said area in which the mushrooms grow. In an embodiment the picking apparatus (1) further comprises: a first member (11) coupled to the picking head (7) and arranged to move back and forth horizontally for moving the suction pad apparatus (17) horizontally; and a controlled parallelogram mechanism (15, 18) for lifting and lowering the suction pad apparatus (17), by means of which the suction pad apparatus (17) is coupled to the first member (11), and which is arranged to maintain the position of the suction pad apparatus (17) irrespective of the height on which the suction pad apparatus is positioned.
