<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a translucent magnesium-aluminum complex oxide ceramic with a spinel type crystal structure exhibiting high translucency and being excellent in mechanical strength. <P>SOLUTION: The translucent ceramic is a sintered compact containing a magnesium-aluminum complex oxide with the spinel type crystal structure and boron, containing boron of 0.001-2.0 wt.% in terms of boron oxide, having a mean crystal grain diameter of 0.3-5 μm and having linear transmissivity of visible light at the wavelength of 550 nm of 20% or more when the thickness of the sintered compact is 1 mm. The ceramic can be obtained by processing the sintered compact having a relative density of 95% or more and a mean crystal grain diameter of 0.3-5 μm with a hot isostatic press (HIP) after a boron compound and the magnesium-aluminum complex oxide are added, mixed, formed and sintered. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2007,JPO&INPIT |
