PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a monitoring system adopting a monitoring camera that uses an imaging element, in which the generation of bright-region gradation deterioration on an intruder's (person's) face or the like can be prevented, an image can be easily observed, while suppressing flickers, and after the intruder's exit, the blinking of a warning illumination device can be turned off quickly. SOLUTION: The monitoring system, adopting the monitoring camera 1 using the imaging element, is provided with the warning illumination device 8 for emitting light by supply of current, when an object 19 of an image taken by the monitoring camera 1 is decided as an intruder, an illuminance sensor part 7 for detecting and outputting the illuminance of the photographic environment of the object 19 and a control circuit part 5 for controlling the light emission timing and light emitted quantity of the warning illumination device 8, on the basis of the change in the output of the illuminance sensor part 7.
