PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing carried ruthenium oxide excellent in catalyst performance for producing chlorine by oxidizing hydrogen chloride with oxygen, at high reproducibility. SOLUTION: When carried ruthenium oxide is produced by supporting a ruthenium compound on a carrier and firing the carried ruthenium compound under an atmosphere of an oxygen containing gas, the ruthenium compound is used in the total content of sodium, magnesium, aluminum, silicon, calcium, iron, copper and zinc of 500 ppm by weight or less based on the content of ruthenium.
