PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an apparatus for separating foreign matter capable of separating foreign matter such as suspended matter and settleable matter included in waste liquid and sludge and, in particular, fibrous paste made of cellulose of toilet paper or the like. SOLUTION: The apparatus for separating foreign matter is provided with a waste liquid intake pipe (A) of taking waste liquid from a waste liquid storage tank 1 into a first separation tank 2, an inter-tank connection pipe (B) of allowing treated liquid to flow into a second separation tank 3, a waste liquid returning pipe (C) of returning foreign matter separated in the first separation tank 2 to the waste liquid storage tank 1, a secondary treated liquid effluent pipe (D) of taking out treated liquid from the second separation tank 3 and a waste liquid returning connection pipe (E) which is disposed on the lower part of the second separation tank 3 and is connected with the waste liquid returning pipe (C), wherein the flow rate of treated liquid flowing into the second separation tank 3 is smaller than that of the waste liquid returned to the waste liquid storage tank 1.
