In a system (1) for monitoring road traffic and for predicting slows-downs, a plurality of detection devices (2) are positioned in succession along a carriageway of a road (3), each comprising a local processing unit (9) configured to generate traffic data relating to the transit of vehicles (6) along the road (3); and a central processing unit (4) is connected to the local processing units (9), and is configured to receive the traffic data, and to process in combination the traffic data received from the local processing units (9) to evaluate the fluidity of the traffic along the road (3), and to produce a prediction of the development of queues and slow-downs. Signalling device (13, 16) are connected to the central processing unit (4), and are activated by the central processing unit (4) in response to the prediction of development of queues and slow-downs. |
