PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of preventing lowering of reading image quality by uneven density caused by change of original density by a flare phenomenon. SOLUTION: In the image reader having an optical system by which an original is fed to an original reading position and an original image is read at the original reading position, an influence of secondary illumination light by shade of the original is eliminated and an original image is read with high quality by positively excluding a part of illumination light with high capability of becoming the secondary illumination light by the total reflection by a transmission reflection means installed under contact glass before a phenomenon of performing secondary illumination of the original again is generated in which the light from a lamp with which the original is irradiated is reflected and the reflected light reaches inside the lamp.
