PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic recording medium wherein recording can be satisfactorily performed even when only a magnetic head is used and which is provided with, as a recording layer, a film of an FePt ordered alloy having excellent thermal stability and perpendicular magnetic characteristics. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium provided with a coercive force controlling layer consisting essentially of Ti, a crystal orientation controlling layer formed on the coercive force controlling layer and consisting essentially of Fe and O, and a recording layer formed on the crystal orientation controlling layer and consisting essentially of the FePt ordered alloy is characterized in that an axis C of the crystal of the recording layer is oriented perpendicularly to a film surface.
