Provided are a signal processing device capable of changing the resolution of a synthetic image signal without bleeding the image of a first image signal (or a character signal) contained in the synthetic image signal, and an image output device capable of outputting and simultaneously displaying the synthetic image signal of a plurality of resolutions to and in a plurality of display devices. In case the resolution of the synthesized image signal having the first image signal and a second image signal synthesized is to be changed, a character signal creating unit (12) and a character signal synthesizing unit (13) add, based on the presence/absence of the character signal, such identification information to the synthetic image signal as to discriminate whether or not the character signal is contained. A resolution changing unit (14) separates, based on the identification information, the synthetic image signal into a third image signal containing the component of the character signal and a fourth image signal not containing the component of the character signal, changes the resolutions of the third image signal and the fourth image signal, and synthesizes the third image signal and the fourth image signal having their resolutions changed, on the basis of the identification information. |
