The method involves supplying heated exhaust gases to an exhaust aftertreatment, e.g. particle filter, during a regeneration operation over normal exhaust temperatures. External recirculation of exhaust gases is reduced during the regeneration operation. Exhaust valves of each cylinder in a stroke-piston internal combustion engine is controlled, so that the internal recirculation of exhaust gases is activated. An independent claim is also included for a stroke-piston internal combustion engine with a cam shaft.
