An imaging device mounted on a vehicle and imaging the periphery of the vehicle, the imaging device having an imaging lens, an imaging element, an image processing section, an accident detection sensor, a control section, and a recording section. The imaging element creates an image signal by photoelectrically converting a field image that is based on a light flux from the imaging lens. The image processing section creates, based on the image signal, moving image data when the vehicle is operated. The accident detection sensor detects the occurrence of an accident based on an impact to the vehicle. The control section causes, based on an output of the accident sensor, the image processing section to create accident image data representing conditions of the accident, the accident image data being created using a method different from that usually used.
