This invention is a wireless, speakerphone accessory (700) that allows the user to be in either public or private communication with a remote electronic device like a mobile telephone. The accessory (700) includes a detachable ear bud (100) that can be worn in a user's ear (600) so that only the user hears the audio signal being received. When the ear bud (100) is coupled to the speakerphone accessory (700), the circuitry in the ear bud is used to control a loudspeaker (703) and other components in the accessory so as to convert the combined device into a speakerphone that may be heard by the user and others in his or her immediate vicinity. The speakerphone accessory (700) optionally includes pockets (706, 707) for receiving rechargeable batteries (800, 801), as well as utility pockets (713) for holding spare components like ear sleeves (802).
