<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the performance of a code reader for creating the image data of digital codes and decoding the image data. <P>SOLUTION: An optical image (input image Fg) of a digital code transmitted through an imaging lens 41 is projected onto a prism P. The prism P branches the optical path of the input image Fg in the directions of arrows Va and Vb. The input image Fg branching in the direction of the arrow Va is projected onto a close lens 43a while the input image Fg branching in the direction of the arrow Vb is projected onto a far lens 43b. The input image Fga transmitted through the close lens 43a is decoded after being converted into image data by a first image sensor Sa.
