INDIRECT VARIABLE VALVE ACTUATION FOR INTERNAL COMBUSTION ENGINE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently use or improve intake gas pressure pulse in charging a cylinder.

SOLUTION: A reciprocating piston type internal combustion engine includes: an engine cylinder 10; intake ports 22, 24; an intake runner providing a passage through which intake gas flows into the cylinder through the intake ports; an intake valve 26 for opening/closing the intake ports; and a first flap 68 located in the intake runner upstream of the intake valve and arranged in series with the intake valve. The first flap has first and second positional states that vary during an engine cycle. The first state opens the intake runner passage to permit intake gas to flow into the cylinder through the intake ports. The second state at least partially closes the intake runner passage to limit the flow of gas flowing out of or into the cylinder through the intake ports.
