PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a high-pressure discharge lamp equipped with a translucent airtight vessel using translucent polycrystalline ceramics, easy for light distribution control and suitable for an automobile headlamp. SOLUTION: This high-pressure discharge lamp is equipped with the translucent airtight vessel 1 of translucent alumina polycrystalline ceramics, in which a surrounding portion 1a surrounding a discharge space 1c is continuously integrated with a pair of small diameter tubular portions 1b, 1b extending from both ends of the surrounding portion 1a in its tube axis direction, and the linear transmittance of the main portion of the surrounding part 1a is higher than the linear transmittance in the small diameter tubular portion 1b and higher than 20%, a pair of electrodes 2, 2 enclosed in the translucent airtight vessel 1, and an arc tube IT having an ionized medium sealed in the translucent airtight vessel 1.
