A gear-finishing machine comprises periodically operating means 31 receiving and positioning gears G in axial alignment with a rotatable work-holder 20, a transfer member 26 periodically engageable with a gear aligned with the holder by the positioning means 31, and means to shift the transfer member axiallyinwardly toward the work-holder to displace a gear from the positioning means on to the holder. In a crossed-axis-machine for shaving internal gears, a cutter-slide 14 is moved to- and-from the chuck 20 by a pneumatic device 21. If there is undue resistance to the feeding movement of the cutter, denoting misalignment of the teeth of the cutter and work, the increase in pneumatic pressure opens a spring- operated valve; a jogging action ensures until the teeth engage. If the resistance reaches a certain limit, a switch is operated to withdraw the cutter and re-advance it. The workengaging ram 26 is reciprocated by pneumatic means 28 and is oscillated by similar means 29 acting through rack-gearing. Gears G fall from a shaft 30 under the control of an escapement 30<SP>1</SP> into the cradle 31, which is moved by pneumatic means 32 to bring the gear into a position where the ram 26 may push it into the chuck. After machining, the finished gears are ejected into a shoot 35. In a modification, a gear is moved into alignment with the chuck by a cradle 40, Fig. 5, which is withdrawn during machining, and is then advanced to collect the finished gear. As a pneumatic device 43 pushes a gear from a shoot 38 into the cradle, the gear pushes the finished gear into a shoot 44. Chucks.-The chuck 20 is secured to a frame 56 on a hollow spindle 57 and carries an adapter sleeve 45 in which the gear is clamped. The clamping is effected by three jaws 47 on rods 49 moved axially by a pneumatic device 18 and a tube 61. The rods each have helical slots 51 engaging fixed pins 52 so that the jaws are swung and pulled into engagement with the work as the tube 61 is moved rearwardly. Ejector rods 68 are actuated by a pneumatic device 19 and a rod 73, the ram 26 being swung down to act as a back-stop. The pneumatic devices may have adjustable stops on their piston-rods to limit accurately the movements. The machines may be operated hydraulically. Cutters.-To assist in engaging the cutter with the work, the teeth of the cutter may have tapered leading edges.
