Class 39(3) A terminal arrangement for a sheathed electric heater of the kind having an inner resistor surrounded by a metal sheath 1 from which it is insulated throughout its length generally by compacted insulating material between the resistor and the sheath comprises a terminal lead 4 projecting from the sheath and surrounded by an insulating bushing 3 in two parts enclosed in an outer metal shield 2 permanently secured e.g. by silver soldering to the metal sheath 1; and the bushing 3 is removable from the shield to enable a connection to be made between the terminal lead 4 and a circuit conductor 11, means such as a clip 8 retaining the bushing in the shield 2. The bushing may be of circular or square cross-section, may be constructed at its outer end so as to surround the conductor 11 closely and is in two parts separable along a joint extending in the direction of the axis of the bushing, the joint being stepped at 6 to provide abutting faces along a circumferential path. The spring clip 8 is part of or is mounted on the shield, has a part bearing on the constricted part of the bushing and may be used to earth the sheath. The end of the terminal lead 4 or of a terminal element 10 welded or hard soldered thereto, has a threaded bore and is bent over so that a terminal screw 9 may be tightened to join the conductor 11 to the lead 4 or terminal 10 when the bushing or a part thereof is removed, by inserting a screwdriver into the shield 2. Instead of the screw 9, a terminal member is crimped on to the conductor 11 and engages with a push fit a terminal secured to the end of terminal lead 4. The shield 2. may be of stainless steel, may be slotted to allow a tongue on the clip 8 to bear on the bushing 3 and may protect the end of a heater of a hotplate from cooking spillage.
