PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely determine whether an examined lens is a single focal lens, a progressive refracting power lens or not. SOLUTION: In this lens meter, the examined lens attached to a frame is mounted on a nose piece under the condition where an upper end or a lower end of the spectacle frame abuts to the lens, a measuring light beam is projected toward the examined lens, and the measuring light beam transmitted through the examined lens is received as an index pattern image comprising a plurality of index images, so as to measure an optical characteristic of the examined lens. The lens meter is provided with an image position detecting means for finding quantitatively an interval in the index images arrayed along a vertical direction with respect to the examined lens, a determination means for determining whether the examined lens is the single focal lens, or the progressive refracting power lens, and a display means for displaying the existence of the progressive refracting power lens, when the examined lens is determined as the progressive refracting power lens.
