PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To issue warning before the occurrence of error in cylinder discrimination and phase detection of a cam shaft by diagnosing a condition where timing chain is stretched exceeding an allowable range. SOLUTION: In an internal combustion engine performing cylinder discrimination by the number of cylinder discrimination signals (Phase) output from a cam shaft sensor between cylinder discrimination timing, it is diagnosed whether the timing chain is stretched exceeding the allowable range based on phase difference between the cylinder discrimination signal and cylinder discrimination timing detected by a crankshaft sensor.
