PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystalline compound having general physical properties necessary for the compound, low viscosity, proper optical anisotropy, proper dielectric constant anisotropy and good compatibility with other liquid crystalline compounds. SOLUTION: The liquid crystalline compound is represented by the formula(1) [ wherein, Ra is an alkyl or an alkyl with its terminal hydrogen atom substituted by a group(s2-1), group(s2-2), group(s2-3), group(s2-4), group(s2-5) or group(s2-6); A<SP>1</SP>to A<SP>4</SP>are each a 1,4-cyclohexylene or 1,4-phenylene group; Y<SP>1</SP>to Y<SP>3</SP>are each -O- or -S-; m and n are each 1 or 2, summing up to 2, 3 or 4; and Rd is an alkyl ].
