PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To inhibit execution of acceleration/deceleration operation if there is any passenger at a position prone to throw him/her off balance in the acceleration/deceleration operation, by detecting the existence of the passenger, and to start acceleration/deceleration if there is no passenger prone to reach a dangerous position in the acceleration/deceleration operation. SOLUTION: The schedule operation control device for an escalator, comprises: a scheduler 12 transmitting a speed change command of an operation speed, based on a preset speed change pattern; passenger detection means 20, 21, 22 including detection areas preset on the footsteps of the escalator, and detecting a passenger in the detection areas; an acceleration/deceleration permission determination means for starting the determination of existence/nonexistence of a passenger in the detection areas based on output signals from the passenger detection means 20, 21, 22 on receiving the acceleration/deceleration command, and determines whether the speed change should be permitted or not based on the existence determination result; and an operation control means controlling the operation speed of the escalator based on the acceleration/deceleration command when the speed change is permitted.
