PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the affecting of deposit accumulated on and near an intake valve on an intake amount in an internal combustion engine directly injecting a fuel into a cylinder. SOLUTION: This electronic controller controls an acting angle variable mechanism based on a target acting angle according to the operating conditions of the engine. The electronic controller estimates the accumulated amount of the deposit accumulated on and near the intake valve based on the operating conditions of the engine (step 110). When the estimated accumulated amount is larger than a predetermined valueα, the target acting angle is changed to a value (purge acting angle) smaller than the value based on the operating conditions of the engine (steps 120, 130). By this changing, the actual opening area of an intake passage when the intake valve is opened is reduced more than the actual opening area when the target acting angle is not reduced to increase the flow velocity of an air flowing from the intake passage into the cylinder according to the opening of the intake valve so as to blow off the deposit.
