The system has a transponder unit (7) connected to a transponder antenna (6) for detecting the position of a transponder passed by the vehicle and for detecting the distance of the transponder from the transponder antenna and a computing unit (8) that computes the current vehicle position and orientation from the detected position and orientation using defined motion equations. An independent claim is also included for a method of computing a current vehicle position and orientation.
