PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the following problem: although a long time recording mode can be realized by reducing a bit rate in the case of MPEG encoding such as DVD, the longer the video signal to be recorded is, the larger the amount of time map information is, and a memory size for storage has to be increased. SOLUTION: An apparatus records address information of VOBUs (video object units) onto a recording medium while recording a video signal in data units (VOBU), and includes a recording mode indication means 109 for determining a recording time; and a means 110 for determining a time length of the VOBU, and long time recording is made possible without increasing a memory size 112 for storing the VOBU map by specifying a minimum time length of the VOBU according to the recording mode.
