In a process a process to operate an automotive nitrogen oxide catalytic converter, the duration of the regenerative rich mixture cycle is determined in accordance with the oxygen and/or nitrogen oxide reaction rate. The rate is derived as a function of the catalytic reaction temperature. The rate may further be derived as a function of the exhaust gas mass flow, and/or the catalytic converter's ageing characteristics, and/or the accumulation of sulfur residues. During regeneration the process expels oxygen and/or nitrogen oxide. In the process, the duration of the first regeneration rich mixture phase is determined by the oxygen speed of reaction as a function of catalyst reaction temperature and the exhaust gas mass flow. In a second rich mixture regeneration phase the recovery time is determined by the rate of reaction of nitrogen oxides in the catalytic converter, ageing characteristics and incidence of sulfur deposits. |
