A method and apparatus for determining a spreading factor (SF) of a physic al layer and number of bits for a physical channel in order to support a transport format combination (TFC) of an uplink dedicated channel in data transmission on the uplink dedicated channel in a mobile communication system are provided. A parameter decider selects, among available physical channel bit sizes, a bit size that minimiz es bit repetition and does not require an additional physical channel. Accordingly, the hardware resources of a receiver are efficiently utilized.
