A method for setting an OSD(On Screen Display) time of an image display device is provided to allow a user to voluntarily set a time when OSD characters are displayed on a display unit and display the OSD characters on the display unit during a desired time. If an OSD menu driving signal is inputted by a user while an image signal is displayed(S200,S202), an image display device calculates an average key operating time of a user command inputted during a predetermined uniform time(S204). The image display device extracts an OSD time mapped with the calculated average key operating time, and sets the extracted OSD time as an OSD time(S206). The image display device displays an OSD corresponding to the OSD menu driving signal, and judges whether a user command is inputted within the set OSD time(S208). If the user command is not inputted within the set OSD time, the image display device ends the displayed OSD(S210).
