PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an industrial method for producing a 7-alkyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin. SOLUTION: The method comprises irradiating the corresponding 7-alkylcamptothecin-1-oxide of formula(1)( wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is a 1-6C alkyl ) with ultraviolet light with rays of shorter than 370 nm wavelength in the presence of an acid to effect a reaction to obtain the objective 7-alkyl-10-hydroxycamptothecin of formula(2)( wherein, R<SP>1</SP>is the same as mentioned above ).
