PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an equalizer and an equalizing method in which power consumption can be reduced and degradation in receiving performance can be suppressed even when the receiving environment is varied. SOLUTION: A transmission path response estimator 101 estimates transmission path response from a reference signal and a received signal and outputs it to a control circuit 102. An error corrector/detector 104 detects an error from a soft decision value obtained by equalizing the received signal through an equalizer 103 and outputs an error detection signal to the control circuit 102. The control circuit 102 detects a transmission path response of largest delay having a power exceeding the threshold of power level, determines the number of trellis state assuming the number of responses up to the transmission path response of largest delay as an effective transmission path response, determines the number of taps required for equalization depending on the number of trellis state thus determined, controls the threshold of power level of transmission path response from error detection results and determines the number of taps of the transmission path response estimator 101 similarly.
