PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact and inexpensive image forming apparatus which stores a maintenance mechanism under an ink supply passage. SOLUTION: The image forming apparatus comprises ink jet recording heads 9-12 with nozzle plates where nozzles are arranged in a line shape, ink supply passages 13-16 which are fixedly arranged in parallel to the ink jet recording heads and supply ink, a recording medium transfer part which is set opposite to the ink jet recording heads and transfers a recording medium, and the maintenance mechanism which is arranged above the recording medium transfer part and below each ink supply passage and carries out maintenance through contact with the nozzle plate when an image is not formed.
