PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for manufacturing a composite roll for hot rolling, which method can prevent peeling trouble at a boundary between an outer layer and a core material in a quenching process, and further to provide the composite roll. SOLUTION: In the method for manufacturing the composite roll for hot rolling, the composite roll is formed by fusing and integrating the molten metal composed of a high-speed steel composition as an outer layer material around the core material composed of low alloy steel or cast steel through the continuous tinkering/cladding method. In the method, a raw material for the composite roll, which has a ratio of the sectional area of the outer layer to that of the core material of 1.0 or more, and has a length of the outer layer of 1.5 times or more as large as that of its outside diameter, is prepared by the continuous tinkering method. After that, the material for the composite roll is heated up to the austenitizing temperature of 950 to 1,150°C for 3 hr or more in a heat treatment process, and then is cooled down to 200 to 300°C within 1 to 3 hr, and is kept at that temperature or is successively tempered several times so as to obtain the outer layer having a hardness of 80 Hs or higher.
