A vehicle is normally fitted with an appropriate number of seatbelts as well as with front- and side airbags. The devices (1) are activated when a change in speed is detected by sensors (2), which can be specialized in a particular kind of motion. An additional type of sensors (5) is used for observing the condition of the wheels (4). The data obtained are evaluated by a processing unit (3) in order to exclude a condition caused by a harmless obstacle like a pothole or a curbstone from the range of conditions the protection system would have to react to.
