<p>An early warning system for a vehicle 4 comprises a first sensor 8, for detecting the illumination of rear brake lights 5 of a second vehicle 6, a second sensor 10 for detecting the distance X between the vehicles, a speed sensor (Fig 2, 11) and a control means (Fig 2, 13). The control means illuminates the brake lights 12 of vehicle 4 to warn following traffic 2 when it is determined that the speed of the vehicle 4 is above a threshold speed and the distance is below a threshold distance when the brake lights 5 on the preceding vehicle are activated. The system may have an additional sensor (Fig 2, 14) for detecting precipitation causing the control means to adjust the threshold values. The system may also have an audible or visual alarm 16 in the drivers compartment which is activated when the control means activates the brake lights of vehicle 4. The control means may also record the distance between the vehicles and activate the brake lights if the rate of distance decrease is greater that a threshold value.</p> |
