An apparatus and a method for discriminating a disc in an optical pickup device are provided to detect a wobble signal of each interval by using a tracking error signal when only a focus servo is driven and discriminate an on-groove disc or an in-groove disc by using a frequency and a level of the wobble signal. If a disc is led in(S41), a servo unit drives only a focus servo(S42). The servo unit detects a tracking error signal by the driving of only the focus servo(S43). The servo unit acquires a wobble signal in an in-groove area and an out-groove area by using the tracking error signal(S44). The servo unit discriminates an in-groove disc or an on-groove disc by using a frequency and a level of the acquired wobble signal(S45).
